Yesterday, September 27, 2008 everyones favorite search engine, Google, turned nine. Wow! Hard to believe only nine short years ago google was started and look at it now! The search engine, gmail, calendar, news reader, analytics, adwords, adsense and probably many more I’m not remembering right now. What do you use google the most for? Personally I use gmail, the search engine, and then adwords the most but I use the other services mentioned.

Google pay per click (PPC) advertisers often like seeing their ad on google. This is not a good practice though because google will see the ad as being shown but not clicked on, thus assuming it is not as relevant for the search term and will not show that ad as much. There is a nice way to see your ad but not have it count as a valid page view. You simply search for something crazy in google, not related to your term.. Then after you search add “&adtest=on” to the end of the URL in your browser. You will see a new background and a warning at the top letting you know that this is for AdWords advertisers to test their ads. You can then type in your terms into the search box at the top to see where your ads are showing up. Leave me a comment if you like this or use it like I do.

Today I added in a “Call Me” button from GrandCentral.com to my Northern Kentucky Web Designers - Portal Planet website. It will ring my GrandCentral number. How this works is first you enter your name and phone number. GrandCentral will then call you at that number and then call me. Isn’t technology grand! Go ahead and visit www.portalplanet.net and give it a try.

An affiliate program is a deal in which an e-tailer agrees to pay a webmaster a certain percentage of each sale generated through a link from that webmasters site or e-mail. This is a win-win situation for e-tailers because the webmasters are responsible for generating traffic to the e-tailer and the e-tailer is responsible for closing the sale and thus making themselves money plus the webmaster their commission.
Many larger e-tailers such as Amazon.com have their own in-house developed affiliate program. This works out good for Amazon.com because they have the traffic and reputation already established. Most smaller online retailers do not have the traffic coming to their site to warrant in in-house affiliate program and that is where third parties such as shareasale comes in to help the smaller webmasters. Shareasale is a third party that online store owners can sign up to pay webmasters for sales generated. Shareasale has webmasters already signed up and looking for new opportunities to monetize their website. By signing up with shareasale online store owners gain access to these webmasters and their traffic.

Yep, it happened to me this morning. I installed a plugin and BAMMO! My Outdoors Blog stopped coming up! Just a blank page for the site as well as the admin area. Not knowing much about the wordpress database I was in a panic. I looked online for help as to what to manually remove in the database but I found nothing. Finally after an hour or so of looking I found some PHP code for wordpress and in the comments it read something like: “If a plugin breaks wordpress simply remove the offending plugin from the plugin directory and reload the site”. Sounds too easy but it works. My site was back up running
and I had learned a good lesson.

I get this question asked frequently: Justin, how can I drive more hits to my website?
Usually my first response is “Start a blog about your industry”. Many companies do not know what a blog is. A blog is a tool which writers create articles or posts about anything but usually for a business it is company news or industry related news. A blog is a powerful tool for non-technical people because after it is setup very little technical knowledge is needed to run the blog.
There are two main types of blogs: hosted and self-hosted. Hosted means that the blog software is hosted at a third party such as Blogger, Typepad, or wordpress.com. The other type of blog is one which is downloaded and hosted by usually the same company that hosts the companies website. A major player in this market is wordpress.org. There are several main differences between the types of hosting. The first is that generally a hosted blog is kept up by the third party security wise. That means if an exploit is found the hosted company will fix the issue. A self-hosted blog requires that the company manually update their blog for security issues. A plus to a self-hosted blog such as wordpress is that there are literally hundreds of “plugins” available. Plugins extend the functionality of the blog by adding items such as polls, the ability to subscribe to comments to that when a new comment is made an e-mail is sent out, podcasting, and more. To see the plugins available for wordpress go here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ .
