Your eyes scan webpages in an F shaped pattern

by Justin on June 7, 2006

I just ran across an article related to usability and how visitors eyes scan web pages. It appears that your eyes make an “F” pattern when browsing a site. Usually 2 strokes across and then a vertical stroke. What is interesting about this article is how they show the different “hot spots” on different types of pages such as a search engine page, an e-commerce page, and an “about us” type of page. The article also offers recommendations on how to arrange your paragraphs with the important information in the first two paragraphs and then use bullets and lists to convey your message. Here’s a link to the article: F-Shaped Pattern For Reading Web Content.
